Many thanks to the individuals and the organisations who are helping GIFT OF LIFE AUSTRALIA achieve it's mission to save lives by increasing the representation of ethnic minority groups such as the Jewish people on the donor registry.
Wolper Jewish Hospital
Wolper Jewish Hospital was established in 1948 to provide quality medical care in accordance with Jewish culture and religious observance. It is the only Jewish Hospital in Australia and is a not-for-profit community hospital. It is a centre of excellence for acute medical, palliative, rehabilitation and community services. The hospital does not receive funds from any government sources, nor from the JCA (Jewish Communal Appeal).
Wolper Jewish Hospital Community Services includes a Genetic Carrier Testing Program (initially called the Tay-Sachs Prevention Program), Cancer Genetics Program, Wellbeing Program, Community Outreach Program and now also the Gift Of Life Australia.
Wolper Jewish Hospital Board member, Shula Endrey-Walder has since 1994, been recruiting volunteer Jewish stem cell donors onto the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry in order to increase the representation of Jews on the Registry. Shula is a scientist specialising in Genetics and has volunteered her time and expertise to test members of the community at the Hospital on Sundays as potential donors to increase the chances of finding unrelated matches for patients in need of a transplant to save their lives.
